wednesday the 8th of february was our first get together only a handfull of people turned up and not normally being a people person I was nervous as hell.. We bought a drink and sat down in the side room of the victoria inn.. once we'd found out everyones names and decided who knew who I passed around a leaflet explaining the basics of roller derby and equipment we need, we talked lots about equipment we wanted to buy and uniforms etc.. passing around an example of other derby players team names, uniforms and individual names we all had a giggle imagining what names we could call ourselves..
I passed around the skates, helmet and pads I'd bought and took the mick out of each other trying on my pink helmet I think those things look funny on everyone untill your in a big group with you all wearing them lol Everyone agreed our uniform idea was a good one and cant wait to get a t-shirt so we feel more like a team... lets hope I loose a few stone before we go public in our fishnets and skorts haha.. Pretty much everyone there said they hadnt skated in years most like me more than 10 years so we all agreed on starting skating as soon as possible but our first few skating sessions just to be casual ones to find our feet and make sure were all into skating before going the whole hog and actually learning to skate derby style, also before buying our proper kits.. Although a few of the women share my enthusiasm and have already planned exactly what there buying down to the gum sheild haha I do believe Nikki was shopping online during the meet lol... we spent quite a bit of time with just general conversation chatting about our kids or partners or our younger years etc having a laugh with our visions of us being an actual team kicking ass on the track.. or falling on our ass on the track lol.. We spoke about the dedication its going to need to get the this off the ground with fundraisers and looking for sponsors etc and what we could do to attract more interest... we all left just after ten with my missions set.. get prices for t.shirts, post invites for next weeks meet and book the skating rink for 2 weeks time... and that about sums it up.. I met some really nice people and went home all excited that this might actually work!!
